AKAN in Omega

"If anyone of our team members struggle with substance abuse or addiction problems, we want to offer them a helping hand out of the situation," says Jorunn Wathne, Omega`s AKAN representative.

Through AKAN (The resource center for substance abuse and addiction problems) we offer a low threshold point of contact for leaders who experience substance abuse among employees. Leaders in the Omega organization are the first to be contacted if employees have concerns regarding substance abuse or addiction problems in the company. Leaders can then seek advice with AKAN-representative Jorunn Wathne, and together find a way to handle the situation.

Sparring partner

As an AKAN company we can help with the first step on the way out of the problem.

“We will not diagnose anyone or provide treatment. But if AKAN gets involved at an early stage, we can refer to other help. I am first of all a sparring partner for leaders who come across employees struggling with substance abuse problems,” says Wathne.

Jorunn Wathne is our AKAN representative. "We will not diagnose anyone, but offer a helping hand to those who wish need help to get away from the problems."

AKAN is a forum with special expertise in the area of substance abuse and addiction problems, and Wathne offers expertise and guidance for further action. AKAN has a comprehensive framework and guidelines for helping employees with their problems.

“Confidentiality is always maintained, and if you are encouraged to register in an AKAN program for help, you are free to accept or decline this offer,” Wathne says.

Exposed

In 2007 the AMU committee decided that Omega should be an AKAN company, to be better able to deal with problems surrounding substance abuse and addiction.

“All oil and gas companies have a very restrictive policy on alcohol use, and the same requirements are demanded of Omega as their supplier. But preventing substance abuse is also about responsibility and caring. Many of our consultants go away for longer periods of time to work, and do not return to home and family at the end of the working day. They are therefore exposed to environments where alcohol use easily can become a problem. It is important for us to know how to handle and react if these problems occur,” says Omega CEO, Petter Aalvik.

Simultaneously with Omega becoming an AKAN company, a new substance abuse policy was introduced. Read more about AKAN and our Substance Abuse Policy.
