Retired, but still keeping active
Published: 12.08.09 (updated: 09.02.11)
In 2009 Helge Johan Westgaard decided to end his working career. He became one of Omega's first retirees.

– I suppose I have thought about it for a while, Helge Johan admits, but I have not been very stressed out about it.
– Travelling has always been a passion of mine, and now I will have more time to enjoy the family caravan. Of course I have used it before, but more often as lodging when stationed somewhere for consultancy. Now it is time to travel to experience both Norway and the rest of Europe.
Sailing is another one of Helge Johan's passions. Since 2003 he has been the owner of a 32 foot sailboat, but unfortunately he has not had time to enjoy it as much as he wanted. Now he has plans to sail the coasts of Denmark and Sweden.
– There are a number of popular sailing destinations, many great new ports and outports, pleasant sailers and “lots of weather” still to see.
More than enough to do at home
When Helge Johan and his wife are not travelling and enjoying the retired life, there are also more than enough tasks waiting at home. Among other things, an old porch needed mending this summer.
– I also got “offered” to clean out some firewood that had been stored a bit too long and no longer usable. Now, of course, everything is cleaned out and firewood for the entire next winter is in place.
Helge Johan thinks one of the many advantages of being retired is not having to hurry up finishing lawn mowing or other gardening tasks in time for work on Monday morning. Not to mention the privilege of going berry picking in the woods whenever he wants to.
Enjoying the cabin

– This winter we will definitely take a few trips to our cabin in the mountains, Helge Johan tells us. – The cabin is not hooked up to the power grid, but we make do with solar panels. The LED fixtures are now so efficient that it usually is more than enough power in the solar panels to provide the entire cabin. I will probably install some more spots this winter, there is always room for improvement.
Helge Johan evidently is not spending his retirement sitting around in the rocking chair. There is lots to do, but hopefully he will also miss us at Omega sometimes. We would be happy to hear from him once in a while, and if the caravan swings by our area, we have an open door and a cup of coffee ready.
Enjoy retirement, Helge Johan!
