Location
The apartment is situated in Calahonda, a holiday resort between Marbella and Fuengirola. Marbella is famous for being an exclusive vacation paradise for wealthy Europeans and Arabs. It has a lively city centre with restaurants and bars, and about 25 km of beaches in and around the city. Fuengirola is a very old town, and with its 60 000 inhabitants it is one of the largest tourist towns on Costa del Sol.
Sights
- The Norwegian Church Abroad (Sjømannskirken) is right next door to the apartment.
- The city of Marbella is a 10-minute drive away.
- Cabopino Beach is 1 km away in the Marbella direction.
- La Canada, one of Europe’s most impressive shopping malls, is situated right outside the city of Marbella.
- Porto Banus is a fantastic port with a beaches, nightlife and splendid yachts. Well worth a visit.
- Mijas is a quaint old mountain town with a traditional Spanish flavor. It is just a 15-minute drive from the apartment, and is a must-see.
- Ronda is a city with amazing architecture. 1 1/2 hour drive from the apartment.
- There are about 70 golf courses in the area.
- The nightlife of Fuengirola and Málaga comes highly recommended.
Climate
Marbella has an average temperature of 18C degrees throughout the year. In summer the temperature is usually 25C–35C degrees. The area has approximately 320 sun-filled days per year, with rain generally limited to November and March.
Food
Most of us are well acquainted with paella, gazpacho and chorizo, but the Spanish art of cooking offers much more than this. Spain is the origin of a broad range of stews, soups, beans, fish- and meat dishes. Lunch, the main meal of the day, is usually served between 13:30 and 16:00; Supper tends to be much lighter than in Northern Europe and is served between 22:00 and 23:00.
Night life
The night life of Marbella is quite vivid, featuring discos, bars and clubs. Several of the venues offer live music. Marbella is also known for its fiestas. There is a fiesta in the first part of June for the town’s saint, San Bernabé, and another in July as the fishermen pay tribute to their saint during “Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen”.
The complex
The apartment is connected to an apartment hotel called Atlantic Club. There are 100 apartments in the complex, about 25 of them are Norwegian-owned. In addition to a 24-hour reception, the complex has three pools, fitness centre, saunas, restaurant, bar, medical centre and car rental. The Norwegian Church Abroad (Sjømannskirken) is right around the corner, and the beach is a 15-minute walk away.
Attractions
There are around 30 golf courses within a 30-minute driving range. A two-hour drive away from the apartment, you will find the downhill slopes of Sierra Nevada (host of the alpine World Championships in 1996).

Getting there
It is necessary to organise your own flights to and from Calahonda. Prices may vary, but are usually approximately in the range of 1 000 – 3000 NOK from Norway. The closest airport is Málaga (AGP), which is served by most major European airlines. SAS Braathens fly to Málaga out of Oslo, while Norwegian fly out of Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim. Gibraltar Airport (GIB) is another option, a 40-minute drive from Calahonda. Gibraltar Airport is highly recommended, due to its location just 500 metres from the city centre (in fact the city’s main road actually crosses the runway). British Airways and Monarch Airlines fly out of London to Gibraltar for a reasonable price.
Address
Atlantic Club, Campanario de Calahonda, Costa del Sol
Directions
It takes about 30 minutes to drive from the airport to the apartment:
Drive straight once you exit the airport, and pass the San Miguel beer plant (right next to the airport). Make a right turn right after the beer plant, and go for 1–2 km until you see a BMW dealership on your right side. Exit on to AP-7 right after the BMW dealership, and go for about 20 minutes until you see a sign marked “Calahonda”. You will have to pass a toll ring (about 3 € cash or credit card). Make a right turn at the large roundabout in downtown Calahonda. Drive up the street, on the right side you will see numerous restaurants. On the top of the street is Campanario, Atlantic Club.
